BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Erin Flanigan posted a new season-best time to win the 1,000-yard freestyle and the Rice foursome of Casey Clark, Chelsea Fong, Marissa Konicke and Karina Wlostowska won the 400-freestyle relay to pace the Owl swimmers on the first day of the LSU Quad Meet Friday night at in Baton Rouge, La.
The scoring format is that each of four teams in the meet competes in three dual meets simultaneously over a full two days of events. After Friday's halfway point Rice leads crosstown rival Houston by a score of 108.5 to 87.5, and Conference USA foe Tulane 116-77. The Owls trail the No. 24 ranked meet host LSU 135-64.
Flanigan coasted to a win in the 1,000-freestyle with a season-best 10:08.01 that was a full 13 seconds faster than second place. Rice's Quincy Christian was third among the field of 11 entries with a season-best time of 10:23.60.
Rice's other first place finish was at the end of the day in the 400-freestyle relay. The team of Clark, Fong, Konicke and Wlostowska rallied for a come-from-behind victory over LSU to win by less than four-tenths of a second. Heading into the final 100-yards the Tigers led the relay by a narrow 18-hundredths-of-a-second over Rice, but the Blue & Gray would not go away so easy. Wlostowska held a close second place before blazing into the lead in the final 50 yards to win the race with a final team time of 3:29.49. LSU touched-in second place at 3:29.83.
Chelsea Fong also had a fast second 100-yard leg on the relay (51.59) to cap-off a solid night overall. The junior sprinter from Cupertino, Calif., posted two second place finishes Friday with 23.84 in the 50 and a 1:51.23 in the 200-freestyle.
Sophomore Casey Clark finished third among 21 entries in the 100-butterfly with a time of 56.67. The Rice duo of freshman Shelbi Ragsdale and senior Kylee Talwar were third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-breaststroke with times of 2:23.43 and 2:24.37. The same two Owls then came back and were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200-individual medley at 2:07.70 and 2:07.75.
The Quad Meet concludes Saturday at LSU. Start time for nine scheduled swim events is set for 11 am. Friday's full results are available at the above links.
