BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Erin Flanigan posted a new season-best time to win the 1,000-yard freestyle and the Rice foursome of Casey Clark, Chelsea Fong, Marissa Konicke and Karina Wlostowska won the 400-freestyle relay to pace the Owl swimmers on the first day of the LSU Quad Meet Friday night at in Baton Rouge, La.
The scoring format is that each of four teams in the meet competes in three dual meets simultaneously over a full two days of events. After Friday's halfway point Rice leads crosstown rival Houston by a score of 108.5 to 87.5, and Conference USA foe Tulane 116-77. The Owls trail the No. 24 ranked meet host LSU 135-64.
Flanigan coasted to a win in the 1,000-freestyle with a season-best 10:08.01 that was a full 13 seconds faster than second place. Rice's Quincy Christian was third among the field of 11 entries with a season-best time of 10:23.60.
Rice's other first place finish was at the end of the day in the 400-freestyle relay. Heading into the final 100-yards the Tigers led the relay by a narrow 18-hundredths-of-a-second over Rice, but the Blue & Gray would not go away so easy.
