Owls Finish Second Overall; Young Rice Team Improved 113 Points Since Last Season
Owls Move Into Second Place After Day Three at C-USA Championships
2014-2015:; Sidelined for almost the entire season... Competed at the University of Houston Invitational, held south of town at the Pearland Aquatics Center (while UH's facility was undergoing renovations)... Swam the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.17), 100-butterfly (58.19) and 100-backstroke (1:01.30) at the meet.
2013-2014: Conference USA Academic Honor Roll; Followed high-scoring performances at the C-USA Championships with solid swims at the inaugural National Collegiate Classic, helping the Owls win both prestigious postseason meets... Reached the championship final of three conference events, highlighted by a fourth place in the 400-individual medley with the Owls' second-fastest mark of the year (4:19.97)... Finished sixth in the C-USA's 200-IM with a season-best 2:03.42... Placed seventh in the finals of the 200-breaststroke after a season-best 2:18.70 in the morning prelims... Scored a total of 52 points at conference, the tenth-highest total on the team... Contributed 45 of the squad's 582 points at the National Collegiate Classic, the seventh-most by an Owl...Swam three individual events (200-breaststroke and 200- and 400-IM) at the NCC. 2012-2013: Recipient of the program's Rookie of the Year award after a sensational Division I debut... Scored 42 points at the C-USA Championships to help the Owls win the second league title in the program's history... The 42 points was the tenth-highest on the team and the most by any of the Owl freshmen... Made the championship finals of three events at the conference meet... Won the bronze medal in the 400-individual medley with a career-best 4:18.73 that is the fourth-fastest time in school history... Finished sixth in the league in both the 200-breaststroke (2:17.65) and the 200-IM (2:01.63)... The 200-IM is Rice's fifth-best all-time... Not only did she post a 200-breaststroke mark that was the fourth-fastest in Rice history and was a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships, she was the only freshman to make the C-USA finals of that event... Best 100-breaststroke was a 1:07.00 split from from her prelim 200 at conference.
High School - The 2012 Salutatorian of iSchool High STEM Academy in Lewisville, Tex... Maintained a 5.17 grade point average on a 5.0 scale... Scholastic All-American and member of the National Honor Society... Participated in speech and debate... Learned American Sign Language as an extracurricular activities.
Club - Set a host of individual and relay records with Lakeside Aquatics... Achieved short course winter Junior National and National Standards in both 2011 and 2012, three AAAA time standards, and several NCSA Junior National times... Coached by Jason Walter... Eight-time USA Swimming scholastic All-American.
Personal - Name: Shelbi Lynn Ragsdale. Born: May 16, 1994, in Dallas, Tex. Parents: Tom and Lisa Ragsdale of Lantana, Tex. (one brother, two sisters). Has volunteered in host of community service programs, including Relay for Life, Locks of Love and working with her church for underprivileged children. Chose to attend Rice because "they have an amazing swim team that has seen a lot of improvement and the perfect academic environment I was looking for: small, low student-to-faculty ratio, and focused on excellence."
