IRVING, Texas - Rice soccer player Gabriela Iribarne has been named one of 14 student-athletes who will receive the Conference USA Fall Spirit of Service award, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Wednesday (Dec. 17) from league headquarters in Irving, Texas.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award recognizes the voluntary outreach efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The honor is presented three times throughout the season, with Wednesday's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

Iribarne helped lead the Owls to the 2014 C-USA women's soccer championship title, earning Offensive MVP honors for the tournament by scoring two goals in the title game. The Mission Viejo, California, native finished her Rice career among the Owls' all-time top 10 for assists (12) and points (40). She also identified a way to use the sport she loves to help others. Along with her sister Nicolette, the Iribarnes co-chair a charity called Futbol 4 Dreams, where soccer balls, cleats, uniforms and other soccer equipment is collected and sent to underprivileged children around the world. To date, the charity has sent more than 3,000 soccer balls and other equipment to more than 20 countries. A kinesiology and psychology double major, Iribarne holds a 3.46 GPA and is a two-time selection to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.

"I am very proud that Gabriela is representing Rice as one of C-USA Spirit of Service honorees," said Rice head coach Nicky Adams, the 2014 C-USA Coach of the Year. "Over the course of her career Gabi has represented this institution with the upmost class in the classroom, on the field and in our community. She is very deserving of this award. Congratulations to all the C-USA honorees."
