IRVING, Texas -- Rice soccer player Kara Dugall was one of 14 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the league's fall Spirit of Service Award, C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced on Wednesday (Dec.16).

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service of C-USA student-athletes, based upon their outreach efforts, academic standing and participation in their respective sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout full academic year, with Wednesday's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports of football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

Dugall is a senior goalkeeper who has been a leader on the soccer field, in the classroom and in the Houston community. A biological sciences major with plans to become a veterinarian, Dugall has turned her life-long passion for animals into the founding her own animal rescue organization. For the last few years she has networked to take stray dogs off the streets in the hopes of getting them adopted. The McKinney, Texas, native also serves as a volunteer at various animal rescue shelters around Houston. She is a three-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll member, and was part of Rice's 2014 C-USA Championship team as well as the Owls' 2012 C-USA regular season title-winning squad.

"This is a great honor, and we are very proud that Kara is representing Rice as one of the C-USA Spirit of Service honorees," said Owl head soccer coach Nicky Adams. "Kara is very deserving of this award. She has given so much of her spare time and had a genuine impact in the Houston community during her years at Rice. Kara has always represented our soccer program with the utmost class. She will be an outstanding vet. Congratulations to all the C-USA honorees."

Dugall is the second Rice soccer player to earn the Spirit of Service Award in as many years. Former Owl soccer players to receive the honor include Gabriela Iribarne (2014) and Elizabeth Nesbit (2009).
