HOUSTON - Rice's Lauren LaGro has been named a second team All-Scholar South Region honoree by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
LaGro was honored for maintaining a 3.87 grade point average in Kinesiology and her outstanding play on the field in 2012. The senior defender has been a fixture in the starting lineup the last four years. The Dallas, Tex., native earned second team all-conference honors after starting all 21 matches where she was often assigned to mark the opposing team's top scoring threat. Overall the Rice backline recorded eight complete game shutouts and held opponents to just 11.7 shots per game. LaGro served as the Owls' team captain and earlier earned all-academic honors from Conference USA.
Under head coach Nicky Adams the Owls went 11-7-3 for the most wins the program has recorded in five years. LaGro who scored the team's game-winning goal in the final match of the year to clinch the school's first Conference USA regular season co-championship.
