The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recognized the 2014 Conference USA champion Rice Owls as having one of the highest team grade point averages in the country in its annual academic honors list, the organization announced on Monday (Nov. 24).
With 26 Owls on the soccer roster combining for a cumulative grade point average of 3.37, Rice has among the highest team GPAs for Division I teams in the state of Texas and in Conference USA (including both women's and/or men's soccer programs).
Under the direction of head coach Nicky Adams, Rice soccer has made the NSCAA annual academic honors list in each of the last five years. Adams, the C-USA Coach of the Year who guided Rice to the league championship and NCAA Tournament appearance this season, had high praise for the Owls' latest group of honorees.
"I am equally proud of our team's academic achievements as I am for their success on the soccer field," coach Adams said. "The discipline that our players have to be able to work for a conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, while simultaneously thriving in our University's academic environment, is an amazing achievement. These student-athletes work extremely hard to represent Rice and they are deserving this national recognition. Congratulations to all the student-athletes and their respective teams."
