HOUSTON -- Rice soccer coach Nicky Adams (who had served as the program's Interim Head Coach since mid September) was officially promoted to Head Coach, Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan announced on Monday (Nov. 15). The news was extra-special for Adams, as the announcement was made on her birthday.
Adams is only the second head coach in the history of the Rice soccer program. The El Paso native and former All-America player at Texas A&M had served the previous eight seasons on the Rice coaching staff, including the last four-and-a-half as the program's associate head coach. Rick Greenspan appointed her the interim head coach seven games into the 2010 season, and she proceeded to lead the Owls to their best conference start in school history at 5-0-1. Rice went on to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament for the first time since 2008 with its highest seed in that event since 2007. With Adams at the helm for all 11 C-USA league games, four Owl earned all-conference honors and three were named to the conference All-Academic team.
"I am honored and thrilled about this opportunity," Adams said. "When I heard my name and `head coach' for the first time I got goose-bumps. I want to thank Mr. Greenspan and (Sr. Associate Athletics Director-Sport Administration and Support Services) Dr. Jack Garrett for their work with me, especially the last two months, and their belief in me of taking this program to the next level. I want to thank the players on the team. The played with such heart and pride this year, it was unbelievable to be around. I want to thank (assistant/goalkeepers coach) John (Adams), who helped so much by taking-on a lot of added responsibility this season.
"Soccer has always been a passion of mine," Adams added. "The sport means so much to me that it always has come natural to me to want to do my job to the best of my ability. I had put my heart and soul in to the program, and I'm happy to keep doing that. I am ready to keep working hard. We're going to hit the recruiting trail this weekend. This is a great birthday present for sure."
