EL PASO – The Rice senior duo of Julia Barrow and Lauren LaGro have both been named to the 2012 Conference USA Women’s Soccer All-Academic Team, the league office announced from the C-USA championship tournament this week in El Paso.

The C-USA office honored a total of 26 student-athletes for women’s soccer with an All-Academic first and second team. Rice and UTEP were the only two schools to have two honorees earn first team accolades.

All-academic honors for LaGro is familiar territory. She is one of just three C-USA women’s soccer players this season to be named an all-academic honoree in each of the last three years. LaGro started all 21 matches, helping the Owls to a share of the C-USA regular-season title and maintaining a 3.87 GPA as a kinesiology major. The Dallas native was also an all-conference second team honoree as a defender on the Owls’ backline.

Barrow had an outstanding semester in the classroom and on the soccer field where she has been a four-year starter in the midfield. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native was a repeat selection on the all-academic team after maintaining a 3.92 GPA as an English major with a minor in poverty, justice and human capabilities. Barrow led the team with four assists and rarely came out of a game, playing all 90 or more minutes 13 times.
