IRVING, Texas - Rice junior forward Lauren Hughes has been named the Conference USA Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday (Oct. 27). North Texas' Karla Pineda joined Hughes as the co-Offensive honoree. Mean Green goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Hughes scored four goals, had an assist, and finished with a team-high total of eight shot attempts over the weekend in home wins against Old Dominion and Charlotte. The native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, posted a three-goal game against ODU on Friday, and then scored in her fourth-straight game against the 49ers Sunday. Hughes closed out the weekend with the assist on Holly Hargreaves' goal against Charlotte. Seven of Hughes' eight shots were on-goal for a .875 shots-on-goal percentage. She played a total of 144 total minutes over the weekend.
Pineda also registered nine points on four goals and an assist while Kerestine had four saves and two shutouts. The duo led North Texas to a pair of weekend victories.
Rice soccer is 10-3-3 on the season and tied for second place in the C-USA standings with 19 points from a 6-2-1 league record. Not only did the Owls officially clinch a spot in the upcoming C-USA Championship, the Blue & Gray also secured one of the top four seeds at the tournament scheduled for Nov. 5-9 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Owls finished the home portion of its regular season schedule, but still have one final league game left to play. Rice closes out the regular season at longtime foe UAB on Oct. 30. Start time against the Blazers is set for 7 pm in Birmingham, Ala.
