Three Owls Earn Soccer Recognition

Sept. 30, 2011's C-USA Players To Watch

In its ranking of the best 20 soccer players in Conference USA announced on Friday (Sept. 30), the Internet publication named three Rice Owls on its list of C-USA Players To Watch.

The publication recognized twenty of the league's best players with three Owls in the Top 14. The Rice trio of sophomore midfielder Jessica Howard (# 3), junior defender Amy Beger (# 12) and senior defender Hayley Williams (# 14) earned distinction for their sound and solid play this season. The group has helped lead Rice to a 6-3-1 record and to an NCAA RPI of No. 28 in the country. Not only is Howard is among the league-leaders in goals (7) and shots (33), the Dallas native is tied for seventh in the country in game-winning goals (4). Beger and Williams are part of an Owl backline that has helped hold opponents to just 9.5 shots per game this season, the lowest shots-allowed total by a Rice defense in six years.

The Owls have two crucial C-USA road games to play this weekend. Rice is at longtime state rival SMU on Friday at 7 pm. The Blue & Gray then plays at Tulsa on Sunday at 1:05 pm. View's full listing of C-USA Players to Watch at the above link.
