IRVING, Texas - Senior Jenny Fichera has been named a Conference USA Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Texas, on Monday (Sept. 26).
On Sept. 22 Fichera helped the Owls post a C-USA shutout on the road against a Louisiana Tech squad that entered the match with seven-straight wins. Fichera shared the team lead with 90 minutes on the backline and helped hold the red-hot Techsters to just four shots. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native also showed some versatility by recording an offensive assist on Darcy Mickalow's first goal of the season. This is Fichera's first C-USA Player of the Week award this season and the second of her career.
The other C-USA honorees included Jordan Lacy (UTSA) as the Offensive Player of the Week, Kelsey Daugherty (UAB ) as the Goalkeeper of the Week, and Nicole Roseland (Western Kentucky) as the co-Defensive Player of the Week. Fichera is the second Rice player to earn the honor this year. Earlier this season Owl junior Mary Claire Danilevics was named the C-USA Defender of the Week (Aug. 29).
Rice is now 4-3-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in C-USA league play. The Owls next return home to host Western Kentucky and Southern Miss on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, respectively.
