Williams Named Conference USA's Soccer Defender of the Week
Owls Open C-USA Action At Home vs. Tulsa on Sept. 21 at 7 PM
Sept. 17, 2012
HOUSTON - Rice junior Hayley Williams has been named the Conference USA defensive player of the week for soccer the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday (Sept. 17). Madison Whitehead of Colorado College was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week.
Williams played all 200 minutes on defense in the Owls' unbeaten 1-0-1 record over the weekend. On Sunday (Sept. 16) Rice registered its second shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory against Sam Houston State. The Owls also played a regionally-ranked Oklahoma team to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime on Sept. 14. Williams was part of an Owl backline that held last weekend's opponents to just six total shots-on-goal for the 200 total minutes (including the overtime periods). The Dallas native has started all 50-games in her Rice career. The defensive player of the week award is the first of her career.
Whitehead scored the game-winning goal in both of Colorado College's victories this weekend. She now has three game-winners for her career and she is riding a four-match goal scoring streak.
The Owls (3-4-2) have completed the non-conference portion of the regular season schedule. Rice next begins C-USA league play on Sept. 21 with a home match against the University of Tulsa. Friday start time against the Golden Hurricane is set for 7 pm at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
