IRVING, Tex. - Rice senior goalkeeper Amy Czyz has been named the Conference USA Soccer Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday (Sept. 15). Marshall's Erin Simmons was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week.
Czyz notched a double-overtime shutout on the road at Southeast Conference power Arkansas on Sept. 12 (Fri.). She recorded a total of seven saves against a Razorbacks squad that was receiving votes in two national polls. The clean slate was her third of the season as the Rice soccer team moved to 3-1-2 overall. Cyzy lowered her season goals-against average to 0.61 and raised her save percentage to .879. The Danville, Calif., native is the Rice career record holder for shutouts (21) and she shares the school record for career wins (31). This is the third time in her career for Czyz to be named the league's Defensive player of the Week.
The Rice soccer team next opens a three-game homestand on Saturday (Sept. 20). The Owls host the U.S. Air Force Academy in the team's final non-conference match of the regular season. Start time is set for 7 pm at Holloway Field.
