IRVING, Tex. - Rice sophomore forward Lauren Hughes has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for soccer, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday (Sept. 2). Tulsa sophomore Caitlin Jancuska has been named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Hughes posted the second two-goal game of her career and added an assist to lead the Owls to a 3-2 road victory over SEC opponent Vanderbilt on Sunday night. In two weekend games where the Owls were an unbeaten 1-0-1, Hughes recorded a team high total of eight shots, including four on-goal for a .500 SOG percentage. The international standout from Ottawa, Ontario, also tallied the assist on classmate Holly Hargreaves' game-winning goal. This is Hughes' first C-USA Player of the Week honor this season and second of her career.
Caitlin Jancuska anchored Tulsa's defense in a 3-0 shutout of Gonzaga. Jancuska also scored a goal and was credited with an assist in that match.
The Rice soccer team is now 1-1-1 on the season. The Owls have concluded the first of two back-to-back rugged weekend road swings. The Blue & Gray returns to the road for its next two games next weekend at New Mexico and Texas State on Sept. 6 & 8, respectively.
