IRVING, Texas - Rice junior Mary Claire Danilevics has been named the Conference USA Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Texas, on Monday (Aug. 29).
Back from an injury that sidelined her almost all of last season, Danilevics helped anchor a Rice backline that allowed just six shots to crosstown foe Houston Baptist in the Owls’ only match last week (Aug. 26). In addition to playing all 90 minutes of the HBU match, Danilevics headed-in the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 86th minute to lift Rice to a 2-1 victory. She became the 18th player in school history have her first career goal serve as the team’s game-winning goal.
Rice, now 1-1 on the season, next hosts Samford on Friday (Sept. 2) as part of a two-game weekend. After Samford the Owls then host longtime foe Sam Houston State on Sept. 4. Start time for both matches at Holloway Field is set for 7 pm.
