On the same day the Rice soccer players reported for the first time this season, the team was picked third in Conference USA's preseason poll of the league's 14 head coaches. Owl standouts Lauren Hughes, Holly Hargreaves and Quinny Truong were all tabbed as individual preseason all-conference honorees by the head coaches, the C-USA office announced on Tuesday (Aug. 6).

Rice had the most individual preseason honors of any of the C-USA schools. Charlotte was named the league's preseason favorite. North Texas, the 2013 C-USA runner-up, was picked second in the coaches' poll and Florida International was fourth.

A year ago Rice tied for 5th in the 16-team C-USA standings and qualified for the league's postseason tournament. In 2014 the Blue & Gray return nine of 11 starters from last season, including six of the team's top seven goal-scorers. The Owl tandem of Hargreaves and Hughes shared the team lead with nine goals each and constantly put opponents under pressure by combining for 110 shots. Truong, who added five goals and four assists last season, enters her senior year having started all but one game in her tenure.

Rice head coach Nicky Adams, now in her fourth full season at the helm of the program, was pleased about the Owls' individual recognition. The preseason honor equates directly to which players stand out in the eyes of 15 different head coaches.

"We are extremely proud of our players," coach Adams said. "Quinny, Lauren and Holly each had a solid campaign for us in 2013, and definitely deserve this preseason honor. It shows how highly respected they are by the other coaches.

"Conference USA has proven to be a tough conference to play in and every game will be a challenge," the head coach added. "We will have to go out there and play. The season will be here soon. It's an exciting time of year."

The Rice soccer team plays an exhibition match on August 15 (Friday) at Stephen F. Austin at 7 pm. The Owls then host longtime rival TCU in an exhibition on Aug. 17. Start time for the home match is 2:30 pm. Results of the 2014 C-USA Soccer Coaches preseason poll are as follows:
