HOUSTON - A total of 20 matches, including five against opponents that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, highlight the new 2012 Rice soccer schedule head coach Nicky Adams announced on Tuesday (June 12).

The Owls' 2012 soccer season gets underway with a Blue-Gray scrimmage on August 11. Rice officially starts a week later (Aug. 17) with a home game against Baylor. The Bears are one of five 2012 opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. Three of Rice's first five matches (a list that includes Baylor, LSU and Texas State) are against teams that advanced to the NCAA's in 2011.

Coach Adams said the challenging schedule is by design. Playing quality teams not only builds-up Rice's Rating Power Index (R.P.I.), it serves to get the team ready for Conference USA's round-robin slate of games during the second half of the season.

"I am really excited about the 2012 schedule," said coach Adams. "I feel like we put together a very competitive non-conference schedule that will help prepare us for C-USA play. I believe that this schedule will definitely provide the opportunity for us to get into the NCAA tournament."

The schedule is split equally with 10 home and 10 road matches. The Owls host high-profile non-conference clashes against Big 12 powers Baylor and Oklahoma, and state rivals TCU and Texas State. Conference USA foes SMU, UTEP, Colorado College, East Carolina, Tulsa and Marshall close out the 2012 home schedule.

Rice's C-USA road games are a rugged set including Memphis, UCF, UAB, Southern Miss and crosstown rival Houston to close-out the regular season on Oct. 26. Memphis went undefeated (22-0-1) to win the C-USA regular season championship. UCF beat Florida and North Carolina in consecutive NCAA Tournament matches to reach the Elite Eight.

The non-conference games away from home are also an extremely dangerous lineup. NCAA Elite Eight foe Oklahoma State headlines a list that also includes LSU, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State and McNeese State.

Season tickets for Rice soccer will be available beginning on July 2. For ticket information to all Rice events, contact the ticket office at 713-522-OWLS (6957). Information about purchasing Rice soccer tickets is available online here. The 2012 Rice soccer schedule is as follows:
