Sept. 25, 2006
It has been a while! A lot has happened in the past two weeks. I ended the last entry with our win against Texas Southern (Sept. 13). That following Friday we were not scheduled to play but we were scheduled to practice. We were told that we were going to have to all meet in our practice gear to go and, of all things, meet the mayor beforehand. As suspicious as we should have been we were more confused than anything, but did as we were told.
We all met ready to go with carpools of girls and planned to follow each other to... well, wherever we were going. It started to rain. In fact, it started to pour to the point that it was hard to see anything! A few cars lost the others on the way, but we finally made it to our destination: a local movie theater. The coaches surprised us with seeing a movie instead of practicing that day! We saw Gridiron Gang (starring The Rock) ate snacks, and had a great time. It was the perfect practice.
Sunday we played Stephen F. Austin at their place and had quite the interesting experience there as well. During warm-up we saw some dark clouds in the distance with a cloud covering over the field, but there was no rain so it was actually a nice break from the blaring sun. We started the game and about 7 minutes into it heard a loud horn... which meant that lightning was too close and we were going to have to wait at least 30 minutes to resume play. Required to take shelter somewhere, we found ourselves back on our bus where we managed to entertain ourselves. After about an hour we were finally let off the bus. The whole time during the lightning delay it never even rained. It was quite odd.
Anyways, we resumed play and scored two goals before the half was over. The little break proved to be good for the team considering the first seven minutes were not the best soccer. Scoring three more goals in the second half made the final score 5-0 and also made for a pleasant bus ride home! Fast forwarding through the week consisting of weights and practice brought us to San Marcos to play Texas State last Friday night (Sept. 22). We were unable to get a real rhythm or score on the opportunities that we had, but we managed to pull out a late 1-0 win.
As of right now we are undefeated and about to go into conference play. Whereas this is a great stat, we know that the rest of our schedule only gets tougher and that we are really going to have to pick it up to beat the competition that lies before us. We start out at home playing Central Florida (who beat us last year) on Friday night and Southern Mississippi on Sunday afternoon. These are our first home games in what seem like a while! We hope to see as many fans as possible out there to help cheer us on as we begin our conference quest!
