Senior soccer star Annie Kadota beat out some fierce competition from a host of Rice student-athletes to win the inaugural "Owls On Stage" talent show Sunday night in the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial Center (RMC).
Kadota, who played in 19 games and scored two goals for the Owls' soccer team last season, played and sang a solo piano version of Lady Gaga's hit single "You and I." A panel of judges voted Kadota the winner over a spirited interpretative dance routine by women's tennis team that placed second, and two individual performers who tied for third, sophomore baseball player Michael Aquino (guitar and vocal) and freshman football player Christian Covington (vocal).
"This is really an honor," Kadota said. "The whole night was a lot of fun, seeing everyone perform outside their sport. Everyone here is so talented. I tried to sing from the heart. The soccer team could tell you `Sparky' (her soccer teammate, sophomore Alexandra Trenary who also performed in the show) and I get a lot of practice singing in the lockerroom and when we're traveling to road games."
The student-athlete talent show featured 11 performances from members of Rice's various varsity athletic teams. A project of the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the event raised money for the Rice College whose students most-attended the event (McMurtry).
