Feb. 17, 2010
A total of 19 opponents, including 11 at home and four that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, highlight the new 2010 Rice soccer schedule head coach Chris Huston announced on Wednesday (Feb. 17).
The 2010 soccer season gets underway with an exhibition game on the road against national power Texas A&M on August 14. Rice officially starts the season a week later (Aug. 20) with a road game against Big 12 power Baylor. The Blue & Gray plays its 2010 home-opener on Aug. 22 against longtime rival Stephen F. Austin.
NCAA Tournament participant BYU plays at Rice on Sept. 18. The Owls also have road games against NCAA Tournament teams California, Memphis and UCF, with the latter two doubling in importance as Conference USA regular season matches.
The remaining home slate includes non-conference games against Texas Tech and Texas-San Antonio. The C-USA squads visiting Rice are Colorado College, East Carolina, Marshall, SMU, UTEP and crosstown rival Houston to close-out the regular season on Oct. 29.
Rice's C-USA road games are a rugged set including Memphis, UCF, UAB and Southern Miss. The non-conference games away from Rice are also a dangerous lineup of Baylor, Cal, Oklahoma and the University of San Francisco.
In this, the tenth anniversary season of Rice soccer, Coach Huston has continued the program's tradition of playing a top-flight schedule. Huston explained the schedule is made even tougher with the loss of eight prominent seniors to graduation. The schedule will force a youthful Owl squad to grow-up quick in 2010.
"The schedule is definitely going to be a challenging one, particularly for our young team next year," Huston said. "We have never been a program that just schedules games to pad wins. We have a non-conference schedule that will prepare us for our Conference USA games.
"We're scrimmaging Texas A&M to start it off and that will help us learn a lot right away," Huston said. "It's a test we'll have to have before opening the season on the road against another very good Big 12 team in Baylor. We also have Texas Tech at home and Oklahoma on the road, so that's three Big 12 teams on the (official) schedule and four Big 12 teams in a month's span when you include Texas A&M.
"One of the things we try and do is get games close to where some of our seniors are from, and the California Tournament was a great opportunity for that while facing two very good teams (San Francisco and tournament host Cal). BYU is a national-caliber program, and we'll be playing them for the first time in a big home game. We had some great games the last few years with UTSA and Stephen F. Austin, and now we get to host them this season. We already know our conference is very good and has been getting better every year. It will be a challenging and exciting tenth-anniversary season."
