HOUSTON -- Rice University head soccer coach Nicky Adams announced the signing of six new Owls to join the program on Wednesday (Feb. 4), the first national day to sign with the sport.
Adams' fifth recruiting class boasts some of the top student-athletes from across North America who join Rice from some of the country's elite club programs. The class includes forwards Marissa Topolski (Mt. Laurel, New Jersey) and Annie Walker (Grand Blanc, Michigan), midfielders Gretchen Cahill (The Woodlands, Texas) and Dominique Mazero (Fairview, Texas), and defenders Gabby Martinez (Chandler, Arizona) and Darcy Mickalow (Burlington, Ontario, Canada).
Four of the six signees were recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com as being among the nation's most high-impact players for their club teams. The talented new players are certain to play a major role in the upcoming 2015 season where the Owls look to defend their Conference USA title. Coach Adams stated the group is also in-line with Rice's challenging academic demands.
"I am very excited about this this incoming class," coach Adams said. "These six signees are wonderful. Our staff went all-over to find these players. From New Jersey on the east coast out west to Arizona, from home here in Texas up to Michigan and into Canada, we made an effort to identify players who not only have a high level of soccer ability and are capable of thriving in Rice's curriculum, but also have a championship mentality.
"After winning the Conference USA Championship and making the NCAA Tournament last season, we thought it was important for this class to have that same mentality," Adams explained. "I am confident these six players joining the program will add to what we've been building in Rice Soccer. Not only are they unbelievable on the soccer field, they are amazing in the classroom. They will be a perfect fit at our school as student-athletes, and I can't wait to have them represent the soccer program at Rice University."
Under the direction of coach Adams the Rice soccer program tied the school record with 14 wins, including the C-USA Championship match to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The 2015 signing class is Adams' fifth at the helm of the program.
