Soccer Lands Six New Owls On Signing Day
Meet The Newest Owls!
Feb. 1, 2012
Nicky Adams announced the signing of six new Owls to the program on Wednesday (Feb. 1), the first national day to sign with the sport.
Adams' second recruiting class features highly-regarded players from coast to coast and, for the first time, from Canada. The class includes goalkeeper Kara Dugall (McKinney, Tex./Boyd HS/Dallas Sting ECNL), forward Holly Hargreaves (New Hope, Pa./The Hun School of Princeton, N.J./Match Fit Chelsea FC), forward Lauren Hughes (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada/St. Peter H.S./Ottawa Fury), versatile Jasmine Isokpunwu (Austin, Tex./NcNeil HS/Lonestar SC), midfielder/defender Becca Koval (Westlake, Calif./La Reina HS/CZ Elite FC), and forward/midfielder Danielle Spriggs (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS/So Cal Blues).
Coach Adams said the class could quickly challenge for some spots in the 2012 lineup of a Rice team that qualified for, and then advanced in, last season's Conference USA Tournament. She praised the newest Owls, and noted the common drive the signees all seem to possess after solid careers while playing for elite club programs.
"We are very excited to welcome our 2012 class," Coach Adams said. "This is a group of young ladies who have the hunger, passion, competitiveness and commitment to continue to make our women's soccer team a powerful and successful program. This class brings a variety of individual talents that will immediately add depth to our squad and continue the hard working tradition to which our Rice Owls are accustomed. We expect many of these young players to compete for playing time immediately and be able to step right in and help make a difference in their first year.
"Academically, all six players have excelled in the classroom and will truly embrace the amazing Rice University culture," Coach Adams explained. "We have very high expectations for this 2012 recruiting class. We are thrilled and look forward to seeing them grow and mature at Rice University."
Under the direction of Coach Adams, who was officially named the head coach on Nov. 15, 2010, the 2011 Owls won their most games in a single season in three years. The team reached the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament for the first time since 2007. The young squad was paced by just four seniors on the roster. The signees join a young squad as five of the regular starting 11 were either freshmen or sophomores.
