WILTON, Conn. - Rice's Holly Hargreaves, a 2012 all-region selection and the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, has been named a national All-Freshman honoree by Soccer America, the publication announced Tuesday (Jan. 15) on its web site.

Hargreaves is one of just 22 Division I freshmen from across the country to earn the honor. Soccer America named her to its All-Freshman Second Team.

The native of New Hope, Pa., garnered a host of awards in her first collegiate season. Hargreaves totaled ten goals as a starter for all 21 games. She tied for seventh in the nation with six game-winning goals and ranked among the NCAA and C-USA statistical leaders in goals (10), points (23) and shots (76). The rookie led the Owl forwards in minutes played (1,552) and she scored a Rice record game-winning goal in four-straight games from Sept. 14-28.

A signee of Owl head coach Nicky Adams, Hargreaves went on to earn distinction as one of just three freshmen to earn all-Central Region honors from the national coaches association. Her stunning season was a breakthrough for the Rice program while playing against some college soccer tradition. Hargreaves was one of just four players from schools west of the Mississippi River to earn All-Freshman honors.

On the soccer field Rice posted 11 victories, its highest single-season win total in five years. The young Owls squad won the C-USA regular season title with just five seniors on the roster. Six of the Owls' regular starting 11 were either freshmen or sophomores. Soccer America's full 2012 All-Freshman Team selections are as follows:
