Nov. 4, 2013
HOUSTON - The Rice soccer team's 2013 season has come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Marshall in the opening round of the C-USA Championship at Holloway Field in Houston on Monday (Nov. 4).
The Owls rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the first half to tie the contest in the 62nd minute. Junior midfielder Quinny Truong slipped a quick pass to sophomore forward Holly Hargreaves charging in front of the goal from outside the 18. Hargreaves settled the ball with one touch and blasted away on a long shot from in front of the goal. The ball found the back of the Marshall net on the right side to make it a 1-1 game. The goal was Hargreaves' ninth of the season to tie for the team lead with Lauren Hughes.
The lead did not last long. Just two minutes later the Thundering Herd moved back in front, 2-1, on a goal by Casey Walsh off a pass from Myka De Marko. Marshall stretched the margin to 3-1 with a final goal in the 78th minute. The Herd, now 10-6-3, advance to play Charlotte in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 6).
Rice battled through some devastating injuries where as many as six key players were sidelined for the season. The Owls closed out 2013 with a 7-8-3 record. The C-USA Championship continues at Rice through Sunday (Nov. 10). Rice head coach Nicky Adams' postgame interview appears below.
