RUSTON, La. -- Behind goals from Lauren Hughes, Holly Hargreaves and Bella Hernandez, the Rice soccer team coasted to a key 3-0 Conference USA road victory over Louisiana Tech Wednesday night in Ruston, La.
With the win Rice clinched a spot in the upcoming C-USA Championship Tournament next week. The Owls are hosting the week-long event Nov. 4-10 at Holloway Field in Houston where the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be on the line.
Hughes notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 30th minute on a cross from Jessica Howard. Howard also assisted on the Owls' second goal of the nigh. In the 59th minute found Howard found Hargreaves with a pass, which she fired to the back of the Lady Techster net. Rice stretched the margin to 3-0 with Hernandez' goal in the 81st minute by fielding Danielle Spriggs' shot attempt off the crossbar and scoring from inside the keeper's box.
The Blue & Gray finished with a total of 16 shots. Owl goalkeeper Amy Czyz registered a pair of saves as the team improved to 7-7-3 overall and an even 5-4-1 in league play. La Tech finished its season at 9-10-1 overall 4-6-0 in conference.
