The Roadrunners took the lead on their first shot of the game in the 22nd minute. Kauwela Neal played a deflection from Taylor Wingerden and converted on a close-range shot past traffic from inside the keeper's box. The score was Neal's first goal of the year.
Rice was led by junior Gabriela Iribarne's seven shots to match her season-high. None was closer than her first half attempt that rebounded off the left post in the 41st minute.
UTSA stretched the margin to 2-0 with a goal in the 88th minute. Laylla da Crus scored her first goal of the season from a crossing pass from Brianna Livecchi.
Owl goalkeeper Amy Czyz finished the match with four saves. UTSA's Bubba Makela posted five saves, including three in the second half.
Rice is now 3-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play. UTSA is 2-8-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference.
The Owls have concluded the weekend road swing and are back home for each of the next two matches. Rice next hosts C-USA foe North Texas on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7 pm. The Blue & Gray complete the homestand on Sunday (Oct. 6) against longtime rival Tulsa. The match is slated for a live television broadcast with a new 3 pm start time.
