BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Rice soccer team scored goals in each half to claim a 2-0 Conference USA road victory over Western Kentucky at the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Ky.
Rice improved to 6-2-1 on the season and remained undefeated in C-USA action at 3-0-0. Western Kentucky is now 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference.
The Owls opened the scoring in the game's 12th minute. Darcy Mickalow served a crisp pass from the right wing into traffic in front of the WKU goal. Senior Nia Stallings headed the ball to the back of the Hilltoppers' net for a 1-0 advantage and her fifth goal of the season.
The Rice defense was playing solid looking for its second-straight conference shutout, but some insurance on the scoreboard would still be a welcome addition. In the 47th minute, Lianne Mananquil had the ball inside the 18 but with the WKU defense closing in fast. She played to true freshman Rebecca Keane sprinting to the goal, who converted on a hard grounder for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Blue & Gray went on to control the tempo in the second stanza with a 15-4 advantage in shots for the period, and a 23-10 margin in shots for the full 90 minutes. Rice sophomore Maya Hoyer finished the night with four saves on the way to her fourth complete game shutout this season.
