HOUSTON -- The Rice soccer team held a 16-14 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 margin in shots on-goal, but SEC foe LSU claimed a 1-0 win over the Owls Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field on the Rice campus.
The teams were locked in a 0-0 stalemate until midway through the second half. In the 70th minute, LSU sophomore Heather Magee found senior midfielder Alex Ramsey with a pass in a crowded keeper's box. Ramsey connected on a shot to the back of the Rice net for her first goal of the season.
The Owls had shot attempts corralled at the LSU net six times. The closest calls from senior Hayley Williams off a corner in closing seconds of the first half, and a sensational save by Tiger keeper Megan Kinnemann on an attempt by Quinny Truong in the game's final minutes.
Rice is now to 2-3-2 on the season. LSU improved to 4-3-1 overall.
The Owls still have one more game to go in the three-game homestand. The Blue & Gray next host Big 12 power Oklahoma State on Friday (Sept. 20) at 7 pm.
