ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Rice soccer team finished with a lead in the final shots total for the match, but the University of New Mexico claimed a 3-0 home win over the visiting Owls Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Lobos scored on a header from close range in the 27th minute and added two more in the second half for a 3-0 final. Rice held an 8-7 lead in shots for the contest, including Owl sophomore forward Holly Hargreaves who led all players with four attempts. UNM goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich made a dynamic save on Lauren Hughes' first half shot attempt would have tied the game.
Rice is now 1-2-1 on the season. New Mexico improved to 2-3-0 overall.
The Owls still have one more game to go in the rugged weekend road swing. The Blue & Gray next play at longtime rival Texas State on Sunday (Sept. 8) at 1 pm.
