BERKELEY, Calif. - The 19th-ranked California soccer team used three first half goals on the way to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Rice Owls Friday evening on the road in Berkley, Calif.
The Golden Bears took advantage of an Owl own-goal after a deflection for a 1-0 lead in the game's fifth minute. Cal then successfully converted on a penalty kick in the game's 10th minute and quickly stretched the margin to 3-0 with a goal off a direct free kick by Alex Morgan in the 11th minute.
Rice answered with a goal by senior forward Korey Taylor in the 40th minute to put the Blue & Gray on the board in the first half. Taylor fielded a pass from freshman Jordan McCray on the wing inside the 18 and needed only a moment to blast the ball with her left foot to the left side. The score was Taylor's first goal of the young season and the tenth of her career. The McKinney, Tex., moved into a tie for ninth place on the school's all-time list for goals with Owl great Ashley Anderson. McCray's assist was the first of her career.
Cal added the final goal of the match in the 86th minute with Alex Morgan's second score of the night. Rice fell to 1-3-0 on the year while the Golden Bears remained undefeated at 2-0-2.
The Owls close out the weekend action in the Golden Bears' home invitational tournament on Sunday (Sept. 5). Rice next plays the University of San Francisco at 2:30 pm Central Time (12:30 Pacific) at Cal's Edwards Stadium. In Friday's early game of the tournament the Dons fell to Hawaii 3-2 to snap a three-match win streak.
