NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Lauren Hughes scored twice in the first half and assisted on Holly Hargreaves' goal in the second to lift the Rice soccer team to a 3-2 road victory over SEC foe Vanderbilt Sunday night in Nashville, Tenn.

The win completed an unbeaten (1-0-1) road swing for the Owls after battling to a 0-0 draw at Western Kentucky on Friday night. In the 34th minute of Sunday's contest junior Quinny Truong lined a serve that found Hughes in traffic just outside the box. Hughes converted on a shot attempt to the back corner of the Vandy net for team's first goal of the season.

Hughes then added a second goal just before the end of the first half. This time Hargreaves drew the Vandy defense in before threading a pass to a sprinting Hughes inside the box. The international standout from Ottawa, Ontario, buried the ball to the back left corner for the second two-goal game of her career and a 2-0 lead. The Hughes-and-Hargreaves combination weren't quite finished. In the second half Hughes found Hargreaves with a pass, who then bounced a shot in off the right post. Hargreaves first goal of the season stretched the margin to 3-0 in the 50th minute.

Vanderbilt, fresh off a road win at Memphis on Friday, would not go away so easily at home. The Commodores rallied for goals in the 73rd and 79th minute to cut the lead to 3-2. Vandy held a 9-2 advantage in shots and 5-1 lead in corner kicks in the second half, but the Owls' backline dug-in to close-out the road victory over an SEC opponent.

Rice is now 1-1-1 on the season. Vanderbilt moved to 1-2-1 overall. The Owls have concluded the first of two back-to-back rugged weekend road swings. The Blue & Gray returns to the road next weekend with games at New Mexico and Texas State on Sept. 6 & 8, respectively.
