CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The senior duo of Lauren Hughes and Danielle Spriggs each scored goals to pace the Rice soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Owls' first road game of the season on Friday evening.
Rice had some solid possession in the first half and began registering shots to match. The Owls may have been frustrated early getting called offside five times, but the squad broke through with a goal in the 30th minute. Hughes launched a hard free kick from more than 20-yards out on the left wing and found the back of the net on the right side. Her second goal of the season was also the 34th of her collegiate career to break her own school record.
The Owls proved to get even more offensive in the second half. The Blue & Gray took 13 shot attempts after the intermission to finish the game with a 21-7 lead in the category. Rice also had a comfortable 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Rice was playing forward, but still only had a narrow one-goal lead to show for it. In the 76th minute, Hughes had the ball and some room inside the 18. As the Islander defense moved to contain Hughes, she played the ball wide to Spriggs hustling to get open. Spriggs scored her first goal of the season with a liner to the back post and a more-comfortable 2-0 margin.
Owl goalkeeper Zoe Pochobradsky finished with a pair of saves on the way to the first complete game shutout of her career. Rice is now 2-1-0 on the season. The Islanders fell to 0-3-0 overall.
The Blue & Gray has one more game to play this weekend, and it will be in the city of Houston, but not at home. The squad heads way downtown on Sunday (Aug. 30) to face Sam Houston State at BBVA Compass Stadium - the professional soccer home of both the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash. Start time for the match is 4 pm. The college contest is part of a soccer double-header where the Houston Dash hosts the Boston Breakers in a NWSL regular season game. Start time for that pro match is 7:30 pm.
Tickets to Sunday's game at BBVA Compass Stadium includes both the Rice and Houston Dash games. The cost for admission to the double-header is $20. Tickets are available for purchase online here.
Also, note that Sunday's match may be at a neutral setting of BBVA Compass Stadium, but Sam Houston State is the home team for the match. The Owls are the visiting team and will wear the road kit.
