Owls Back in Action Sunday vs. Charlotte
The Owls (9-3, 0-1) close out their weekend of C-USA contests with a home date versus the Charlotte 49ers (9-3, 1-0) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rice saw their six-game winning streak snapped on Friday in the C-USA opener to Old Dominion while the 49ers won their sixth straight contest with a 78-63 victory at North Texas. Charlotte leads the all-time series against the Owls, 5-0.
Last Time Out
Rice saw their season-high, six-game win streak come to a close with a 59-47 setback to Old Dominion Friday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse in the Conference USA opener. The Owls lost at home for the first time this season (5-1) despite a team-high 14 points from senior forward Jasmine Goodwine, who pulled to within 24 points of 1,000 for her career in the loss. The loss was the first for the Owls since a 65-51 loss at Oklahoma State back on Nov. 26. Rice’s 47 points on Friday were a season-low as was the team’s 28 percent shooting.
Charlotte Scouting Report
Winners of six straight, the 49ers enter play on Sunday with four players averaging double-figures in scoring, led by Grace Hunter (14.6 ppg) and Lefty Webster (13.8 ppg). Webster leads all C-USA players in field goal percentage (49.6) while Hunter ranks fourth (47.1). The 49ers lead all of C-USA in blocked shots (6.6 bpg) and pose the second-best turnover margin (+3.5). Charlotte also commits the fewest fouls (14.8 fpg) among all C-USA teams.
No Points for You
Much of Rice’s success this non-conference season can be attributed to their stingy defense. The Owls have not allowed more than 66 points in a game this season and rank as the top scoring defense in C-USA (53.4 ppg).
Goodwine Chasing History
Senior forward Jasmine Goodwine enters play Saturday with 976 career points, just 24 points away from becoming the 16th player in Rice history to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The Killeen, Texas native is averaging 10.3 points per game this season.
The Owls hit the road for a pair of C-USA contests, beginning Jan. 5 at Middle Tennessee, followed by an afternoon showdown at UAB on Jan. 7.
