NEWS & NOTES
Owls Open C-USA Play vs. UTEP
The Rice Owls women’s basketball team continues their five-game homestand on Friday with their Conference USA opener vs. the UTEP Miners (9-1) at 2 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls, who are 3-7 all-time in C-USA openers, will be searching for their first home victory (0-5) of the season while the Miners are 1-1 on the road. Rice holds a 26-14 all-time advantage over the Miners, including a 79-62 victory over UTEP in last year’s regular season finale.
Last Time Out
Rice sophomore guard Shani Rainey recorded her second double-double in as many games but a 9-2 close by the Loyola Chicago Ramblers proved to be the difference in a 57-50 home loss Monday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls held Loyola to just 36 percent shooting from the field in the non-conference finale, but 24 Rice turnovers resulted in a 25-11 points off turnovers advantage for the Ramblers. Rainey registered her third double-double of the season with a game-high 15 points and tied Jasmine Goodwine for the team-lead with 11 rebounds.
UTEP Scouting Report
The Miners won nine out of 10 contests in non-conference play, including a 60-52 victory over UNLV in their last game back on Dec. 19. UTEP’s scheduled game against Eastern New Mexico on Dec. 28 was canceled due to weather so the Miners will enter play Friday having not played a game in 12 days. UTEP uses a balanced scoring attack in which four players average double-figures, led by Jenzel Nash’s 13.3 points per game.
Lang Makes First Start of Season
Rice senior forward Alyssa Lang made her first start of the season on Monday, scoring six points with six rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Lang also dished out four assists and recorded a block and steal in the loss to Loyola Chicago. Lang is averaging a team-best 10.2 rebounds over her past four contests.
Hawkins Dialing Long Distance
Rice junior Maya Hawkins ranks seventh in C-USA with her 2.0 three-point makes per game. The Mansfield, Texas native has made at least one three-pointer in all but one game this season.
The Owls will have just one day off before hosting the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m.
