NEWS & NOTES
Owls Continue Homestand Following Christmas Break
After six days away from competition the Rice Owls women's basketball team returns to the hardwood to square off against the Loyola Chicago Ramblers Monday evening (7 p.m.) at Tudor Fieldhouse in the team's non-conference finale. Rice is still searching for their first home victory of the season, going 0-4 thus far. This will be the first meeting between the Owls and Ramblers.
Last Time Out
A furious comeback by the Owls came up just short in a dramatic 69-66 overtime loss to Texas Southern back on Dec. 21 at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force an extra five minutes but TSU outscored the Owls 10-7 in the critical overtime. Monday marked the first time this season the Owls had three players score in double-figures. Sophomore guard Shani Rainey notched her second double-double of the season by tying her career-high with a team-best 21 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Rice sophomore guard Wendy Knight also established a new career-high with 14 points while freshman guard Gabrielle Stanton came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points, including a game-tying three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation.
Loyola Chicago Scouting Report
The Ramblers enter play on Monday having lost five of their previous six contests, but that one victory was perhaps one of the biggest in school history. Loyola knocked off city rival No. 16/15 DePaul back on Dec. 21 for the program's second victory ever over a ranked opponent. Redshirt junior transfer Taylor Manuel, from Purdue, leads the Ramblers in scoring (15.6 ppg) while redshirt junior Taylor Johnson averages 12.4 ppg. Loyola Chicago is under the guidance of former four-time WNBA champion and Houston Comets legend Sheryl Swoopes, who is in her third season at the helm.
All the Rebounds Lead to Lang
Over her last three games Rice senior forward Alyssa Lang has gone on a rebounding spree unlike any other time in her career. In all three contests the Rockwall, Texas native has pulled down double-figure rebounds and twice established a career-high with 12 rebounds against both Sam Houston St. and Texas Southern. Over her last three games Lang is averaging 11.7 rebounds per game while playing 34.7 minutes per contest off the bench. Against Texas Southern Lang logged a career-high 41 minutes and also dished out a career-high four assists.
The Owls host UTEP in the C-USA opener on Friday, Jan. 1 in a 2 p.m. matinee.
