Bearkats Await Owls Following Finals Break
The Owls return from an 11-day break in the action to face the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Rice will be looking for their first road victory of the season (0-4) while the Bearkats enter play with a 2-0 record at Johnson Coliseum. Rice leads the all-time series over SHSU, 16-7, but it was the Bearkats who won the last meeting between the two schools with a 79-74 overtime triumph over the Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse back on Nov. 26, 2013.
Last Time Out
Rice junior guard Maya Hawkins scored a season-high 21 points and the Owls as a team knocked down a season-best seven three-pointers in a 62-59 setback to the Houston Cougars Saturday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls led for 26 of the game’s 40 minutes but an 11-2 run by the Cougars in the final 4:49 of the fourth quarter was the difference. Rice led 59-58 with under a minute left in regulation but a three-pointer out of the corner from Marche’ Amerson proved to be the game-winner.
Sam Houston State Scouting Report
The Bearkats enter play on Thursday having won two straight games and four of five overall. Shernise Robertson hit a game-winning jumper with four seconds left in regulation to propel the Bearkats to a 53-51 victory at Texas Southern on Monday. Sam Houston returns eight letter winners and four starters from last year’s squad including Robertson, who led the Southland in scoring last year. The senior combo guard is averaging a team-best 16.4 points this season, followed by senior center Angela Beadle (12.0 ppg).
The Owls continue their march through the Piney Woods with a showdown at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday for a scheduled 9 p.m. tipoff. Rice holds a 4-3 all-time advantage over the Ladyjacks and will be making their first appearance at William R. Johnson Coliseum since 2011.
