Ogwumike Earns Spot on NCAA.com Starting Five

Dec. 6, 2017

HOUSTON - Rice redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike was voted to the NCAA.com's Starting Five on Wednesday, which recognizes the top women's basketball players in the country based on their performances.

In addition to Ogwumike, this week's NCAA.com Starting Five includes Dyandria Anderson, Florida; Tiana Mangakahia, Syracuse; Kia Nurse, UConn; and Shakayla Thomas, Florida State.

On Monday, Ogwumike became the first Owl to earn consecutive Conference USA Player of the Week awards. The Cypress, Texas native scored 26 points in the Owls narrow 82-76 loss at No. 18 Texas A&M, eclipsing 20 points for a third consecutive game by making 11-of-13 shots from the field to go along with six rebounds and five assists. That performance came on the heels of a 22-point game at Kansas, in which she also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Ogwumike earned a spot by becoming the Fans' Choice in online Twitter voting on Tuesday, beating out Samantha Cooper, Fairfield; Jasmyne Harris, Houston; and Sarah Rhine, Drake.

Rice (5-2) will return to action when it hosts Incarnate Word this Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.
