IRVING, Texas – Rice redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday (11/27/17) afternoon.
Ogwumike, a native of Cypress, Texas, helped lead the Owls to a 2-1 record last week and guide Rice to their best start to a season since 2001-02. Ogwumike recorded a pair of double-doubles and averaged 23.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.0 blocks.
The transfer from Pepperdine totaled 19 points and 14 rebounds in a win at Sam Houston State before scoring a Rice season-high 29 points to go along with five steals in a 58-51 victory over Little Rock. On Sunday, Ogwumike notched her third 20-plus point effort of the season with 22 points in a tightly contested loss at Kansas.
Ogwumike currently ranks third in C-USA in scoring (18.7 ppg), fourth in rebounding (9.2 rpg), and first in steals (3.3 spg).
The Owls (5-1) will be back in action this Wednesday (Nov. 29) when they travel to College Station to face the Texas A&M Aggies at 7 p.m. on the SEC Network+.
