Owls Return Home For Bearkats
Rice returns home for one final game before the Thanksgiving holiday when they face Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Owls are coming off an 81-68 loss at No. 21 Michigan State in a game where the Owls trailed by just two at halftime, had four players score in double-figures and shot 50 percent from the field. The Bearkats have won three straight games after starting the year 0-2, including an 85-64 win over A&M-Commerce last time out.
Briefly On The Owls
• Senior Jessica Kuster notched her Division I nation-leading sixth, double-double of the season on Saturday with 19 points and 13 rebounds against No. 21 Michigan State. Kuster, who has 46 career double-doubles, also surpassed Pennie Goff (1981-84) for fifth-place on Rice’s all-time career scoring list of 1,564 points. The San Antonio, Texas native is currently second in the nation with 15 rebounds per contest.
• For a second straight contest the Owls shot 50 percent or better from the field with a 50 percent performance against the Spartans (28-of-56), marking the first time since the 2006-07 season that Rice has shot 50 percent or better from the field in back-to-back games. The Owls hit 50.9 percent of their shots in the win over Southern (11/21). In 2007 the Owls shot 53 and 58 percent against Tulsa and UTEP, respectively.
•The Owls had four players score in double-figures against Michigan State, marking the first time to accomplish the feat since Dec. 13, 2012 in a win over Chicago State. In that contest Kuster and Megan Palmer led the Owls with 14 points while Christal Porter chipped in 13 and Nakachi Maduka scored 11.
• Just two of the Owls first six games have come at home where they are undefeated thus far. Rice is 39-18 since 2009-10 at Tudor Fieldhouse, which includes a 13-3 mark at home in the calendar year of 2011-12 and 12-4 in the 2012-13 season. The Owls are currently on a modest five-game home win streak dating back to last season.
• Kuster is one of only two seniors in America that averaged a double-double in their first three seasons, joining Middle Tennessee’s Ebony Rowe.
