Owls Continue Home Stand With Islanders
The Owls continue their three-game home stand on Monday when they take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders for the fourth meeting in the all-time series. Rice has a 2-1 advantage all-time against the Islanders but it was AMCC that won the last meeting (64-61 on Dec. 2, 2011).
Last Time Out
Rice struggled on the offensive end in a 55-40 home loss to UALR (3-0) on Saturday. The 40 points were a season-low and the fewest by a Rice team since an 85-49 loss to Old Dominion on Feb. 19, 2014. Freshman guard Wendy Knight
was one of three Owls to score a team-leading six points, her first points as an Owl.
Islanders' Scouting Report
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 68-66 heartbreaking loss at Houston, missing a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. The duo of transfers Shay Weaver (17.5 ppg) and Olivia Fouty (16.5 ppg) are accounting for just over 50 percent of the Islanders' offense. The Islanders top two returning scorers from 2013-14, Brittany Mbamalu and Shola Adebayo, are out for the season with injuries.
Crashing the Glass
Through three games the Owls are doing a superb job on the offensive glass, averaging a league-best 17.0 rebounds per game on the offensive end and 46 boards per game overall. Last season, Rice averaged just 41.4 rebounds per contest and 13.3 of those came from Jessica Kuster
(graduated). Senior Christal Porter
leads the Owls this season with 11.7 rebounds per game and has combined with Jasmine Goodwine
to pull down 21 offensive rebounds in three games.
