Owls Host No. 8/11 Texas in Home Opener
For the first time since 2012, the Owls will be hosting a Top-25 opponent at Tudor Fieldhouse when they welcome in the No. 8/11 Texas Longhorns Saturday afternoon. The last time Rice faced a Top-25 program at home was an 89-49 loss to No. 3 Baylor on Nov. 27, 2012. Texas owns a 33-1 all-time record against the Owls dating back to the SWC era. The last time the two teams met was on Dec. 30, 2014 in Austin when the Owls dropped a 77-54 decision to the then No. 3 Longhorns. Rice’s last victory over a Top-25 team came on Dec. 1, 2006 at No. 10 Texas A&M (79-66).

Looking Back
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders went on a 16-4 run over the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter to squeak past the Owls, 60-55 on Wednesday. Rice was led in scoring by junior forward Jasmine Goodwine (12 points) in the loss. The Owls connected on seven three-pointers, the most in a single-game since Jan. 24, 2015 at Louisiana Tech.

Freshmen Provide Scoring off the Bench
The Owls underclassmen scored 34 of the Owls’ 55 points on Wednesday, 20 of which came from freshmen Lauren Grigsby (7 points), Gabrielle Stanton (9 points) and Lexie Ducat (4 points). Stanton went a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point territory and Grigsby added 5 rebounds and 5 assists in addition to her 9 points.

Texas Scouting Report
The Longhorns (2-0) are coming off an 86-33 victory over Northwestern State on Wednesday. Senior center Imani Boyette scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the victory and the Longhorns shot 52 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Brooke McCarty leads Texas in scoring at 18.5 points per game.
