Owls Set Eyes on Islanders
Following a 72-39 loss at No. 17 Kentucky, the Rice Owls travel to Corpus Christi for a Wednesday showdown against the Islanders (0-2) beginning at 7 p.m. Rice is 3-1 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, including a 59-54 victory over the Islanders last season at Tudor Fieldhouse on Nov. 24. In that performance, Jasmine Goodwine scored a team-high 13 points while Megan Palmer chipped in 11 points. Rice also limited the Islanders to just 34 percent shooting.
The Owls got a team-high 12 points from sophomore Shani Rainey and forced 22 Kentucky turnovers but it wasn’t enough to overcome at 27 percent shooting performance in the team’s loss in the season opener last Friday. Sophomore Wendy Knight also came off the bench to hit 3-of-5 shots from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, for eight points.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Scouting Report
The Islanders will also be searching for their first victory on Wednesday after home losses to Cal Poly (56-45) and East Carolina (82-46). Senior guard Shay Weaver leads the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game but the Islanders have shot just 24 percent from the floor through two games. The Islanders went 16-14 last season and returns 10 letterwinners and four starters.
Finding a New Pair of Travel Shoes
The Owls struggled on the road last season going just 1-12 away from Tudor Fieldhouse. Dating back to last season, Rice has lost nine consecutive road contests with their last win coming Jan. 2 at UTSA in the C-USA opener.
