Rice University head women's basketball coach Greg Williams has announced the signing of Breion Allen, from Hoover, Ala. to a National Letter of Intent to attend Rice and play basketball for the Owls beginning in the fall of 2012.
Allen is the fourth Owl signee joining Megan Palmer, Katy, Texas, Elena Gumbs (Ciobolo, Texas) and Alyssa Lang from (Rockwall, Texas) as those that have signed for next season.
A 5'9" athletic guard for Hoover H.S., Allen averaged 11.0 points a game, 3 steals, and 4 assists a year ago. She also nailed 60 3-pointers for the year and had 78 steals. The Buccaneers posted an impressive 33-4 record as the number-two ranked team in Alabama that finished state runner-up, after winning the class 6A state title in 2010. Allen is a Top 100 guard by ESPN Hoopgurlz and is the No. 2 guard in Alabama as ranked by Bama Prep Girls.
She earned all-tournament selections at Big Orange Classic (Hoover, Ala.), Green Bank Classic (Greenville, Tenn.), Over the Mountain (Trussville, Ala.), played in the North-South All Star Game, and made the Alabama 6A all-state tournament team.
Greg Williams quotes on Breion Allen:
"Breion is a strong athletic guard with the versatility to play all three perimeter positions. She is an excellent long-range shooter and has the confidence needed to be a consistent scorer. Breion can also put the ball on the floor to the basket along with a mid-range jump shot, so she can score in a variety of ways. Playing in one of the best high school programs in the country, Breion knows how to win and is comfortable playing in big games, having played in two state championship games. We think she has the potential to be an excellent defender with her strength and quickness. We also like her ability to swing and play some at the point to give us several options at that important position next year with the graduation of four-year starter D'Frantz Smart."
