Rice University head women's basketball coach Greg Williams has announced the signing of Elena Gumbs from Ciobolo, Texas, and Alyssa Lang from Rockwall, Texas, to National Letters of Intent to attend Rice and play basketball for the Owls beginning in the fall of 2012.

Gumbs, a 5'5" guard for Steele H.S., has an 11.4 points per game scoring average and a 2.76 assists average heading into her senior season. Gumbs scored 400 points as a sophomore and 412 points during her junior campaign. She was named first team all-district and academic all-district as a sophomore and junior and earned Texas Basketball Magazine All-State. Gumbs is ranked No. 36 by Joey Simmons' Premier Basketball Report and is a Texas Top 100.

Lang, a four-year starter and three-time team captain for Rockwall H.S., led her team in scoring and rebounding last season at 16.8 points and 11 rebounds per game in being named co-MVP of District 10-4A. She was also named first team all-state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Rockwall went 30-7 and lost in the regional quarterfinals in 2011. As a sophomore (2010), the 6'1" forward was named first team all-district and all-region by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, as the squad posted an incredible 33-5 mark. Following her freshman year, she was named newcomer of the year and first team all-district. Lang is ranked No. 23 by Joey Simmons' Premier Basketball Report and is a Texas Top 100.

Greg Williams quotes on Elena Gumbs:
"Elena is a true point guard who totally understands the role of that position as an extension of the head coach on the floor. She is a strong leader both vocally and by example with her strong work ethic and aggressive style of play on both ends of the floor. Elena has excellent speed and quickness, making her a natural fit for our up-tempo style we prefer to play. She sees the floor well and is an unselfish, pass-first point guard who can also score in a variety of ways. She has played in outstanding programs both in high school and summer, so she knows how to win. Elena is a high-energy, exciting player who should be enjoyable to watch for Owl fans during her career. With the graduation of both D'Frantz Smart and Amenemope McKinney, Elena will have an excellent opportunity to play quality minutes as a freshman."

Greg Williams quotes on Alyssa Lang:
"Alyssa has a physical presence in the paint, offensively and defensively and she plays with an aggressive, relentless style that Rice fans are going to love. Alyssa is coming off of an impressive summer where she really elevated her offensive game against some of the best players in the nation. She is fearless on the court and played well vs. players three to four inches taller without giving ground. Alyssa can score both with her back to the basket as well as facing out to the three-point line. Additionally, she is a high percentage free throw shooter, which is important because she creates numerous free throw opportunities with her physical, aggressive play inside. Alyssa runs the floor well, so she will fit nicely with our up-tempo philosophy. She is a positive leader at her high school both on and off the court. With her strong desire and work ethic, Alyssa will continue to improve her game in college. Alyssa is all about winning and has played for outstanding teams and coaches, both in high school and in the summer. She will definitely compete for playing time as early as her freshman season."
