HOUSTON - The Rice women's basketball program has named Shane Laflin as the new assistant coach and complete the Owls' 2012-13 staff, head coach Greg Williams announced on Tuesday (June 26).
Laflin had previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-Arlington for four seasons. At Rice he will assist in all areas of the program and have a primary focus as the recruiting coordinator. On the court Laflin will work daily with the Owls' perimeter players.
"We are excited to add Shane to our staff as recruiting coordinator," coach Williams said. "Shane brings Division I experience and great enthusiasm to his new position at Rice. He knows Texas and our surrounding states so he will immediately be able to hit the recruiting trail during our important July evaluation period.
"Shane learned under the legendary University of Texas/Hall of Fame Coach Jody Conradt, also working with new UT head coach Karen Aston when she was an assistant coach for coach Conradt. Shane will work with the Rice perimeter players and is an excellent student and teacher of the game."
In four seasons at Texas-Arlington Laflin helped coach the Lady Mavericks to 64 wins and to the Southland Conference regular season co-championship in 2009. UTA reached the finals of the conference tournament once and the semifinals a total of three times. In his tenure, eight UTA players earned a total of ten all-conference awards.
"I am thrilled to join coach Williams and his staff at Rice University," Laflin said. "The athletics department is a close-knit family and I feel at home here already. I'm ready to get on the road this summer for recruiting, and especially looking forward to being on the floor with the players in the fall. Rice is a world-renowned University, and I am so blessed to have this opportunity. We will work hard and will pursue excellence together."
Laflin graduated from Texas-Arlington 2004. He then served two seasons (2005-07) as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Texas under Jody Conradt. With the Lady Longhorns Laflin assisted the program in all areas, including equipment, camps, and as an on/off-site practice coordinator for the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Tempe, Ariz., native returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach with the women's program beginning in 2007-2008.
