IRVING, Texas -- Recent Rice graduate Christal Porter, a standout on the Owls' women's basketball squad the last four years, was awarded one of the 12, Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarships, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Friday.
The league's prestigious postgraduate scholarship is named for Dr. James Castañeda, who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. C-USA annually presents 12, $4,000 postgraduate scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
A native of Germantown, Tennessee, Porter was selected to her first All-Conference USA Team back in March. She was also named to the C-USA All-Academic Team and led the league in rebounding.
A political science and policy studies major, Porter was a four-time member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll, received the Arthur Ashe Junior Sports Scholar Award, the Rapport Award for excellence in Jewish studies and took home a C-USA Spirit of Service Award for her accomplishments in the community.
Porter plans to attend law school with the long-term goal of becoming a judge at the state or federal level.
