Houston -
Rice women's basketball coach Greg Williams Wednesday announced that Megan Elliott of Pace Academy in Atlanta, Ga., has signed a national letter of intent with the Owls and will join the team for the 2007-08 season. Elliott, a 6-1 swing player, averaged 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds and had 10 double-doubles on her way to earning honorable mention class AA all-state honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"We are excited to sign Megan in the spring signing period," Williams said. "Her high school coach moved her to the point guard position her senior year, which allowed us to see her do a lot of things we had not previously seen."
Elliott finished her high school career with 1,605 points and was an all-city and metro pick by the Journal-Constitution. She also averaged 3.1 assists and 2.8 steals a game, and shot 73 percent from the free throw line.
"She is a versatile offensive threat," Williams said. "Having played both in the post and on the perimeter, she can shoot the three, post up and attack the basket. We were impressed with her ability to get to the free throw line from the perimeter, as she had numerous games with 10 or more free throw attempts. Megan runs the court well, is fast with the ball in transition, and is an excellent passer. We have had some success in the past two seasons with a taller player at the small forward position (Samantha Stovall), and feel Megan can provide us similar flexibility at the 3-4 positions in the future. We think Megan has a lot of games ahead of her as she has only totally focused on basketball the last two seasons after splitting her efforts with high-level club soccer prior to that."
