IRVING, Texas – Rice women’s basketball junior forward Christal Porter was among 12 student-athletes who were recognized by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Wednesday as recipients of the C-USA Winter Spirit of Service award.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with today’s honorees representing Conference USA’s winter sports: men’s and women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.
Porter made 29 starts for the Owls this season, averaging 7.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She collected four double-doubles and was named the Rice Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Porter ranked third on the Owls in field goal percentage (.419), second in total rebounds (200), second in blocks (14) and second in total points (222).
A native of Germantown, Tenn., Porter organized a Houston Food Bank can collection event, the Annual Night of the Owl Awards Banquet, and is the liaison to other organizations across campus. She is a three-time selection to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll as a political science and policy studies double major and currently boasts a 3.38 GPA.
