HOUSTON, Texas – With the 2013-14 season in the rearview mirror, the Rice Owls women’s basketball team immediately shifts their attention to next season and with it the infusion of three newcomers who will hope to make an impact for years to come.
Two of the future Owls received good news this past week when it was announced that both Shani Rainey (4-A, Guard, 5-11, Lovejoy HS) and Wendy Knight (5-A, Guard, 5-9, Reagan HS) were selected to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-State squads.
Rainey was a 2014 McDonald’s All-American Team nominee, as well as a Texas Girl’s Coaches Association (TGCA) All-State selection. She was named to the District 13-4 First Team All-District (fourth consecutive season) and was the District 13-4A Offensive Player of the Year. Rainey was also selected to the TABC All-Region squad.
Knight is also a 2014 McDonald’s All-American Team nominee, and along with being named All-State, has been selected to the TABC All-Region teams. She is also a First-Team All-District selection and has been chosen to play in the TABC, TGCA and Texas Sports Hall of Fame All-Star Games.
Rice’s other incoming freshman is Courtney Brown, a 6-2 post from Cedar Ridge HS in Round Rock, Texas. Brown helped lead her squad to a 30-4 record this past season and a share of the 5A Region II District title.
