Owls To Host UTRGV in WBI Quarterfinals
After recording their first postseason victory since 2006, the Rice Owls women’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday when they host UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in the quarterfinals of the WBI. Rice is 8-0 all-time against the former UTPA, having last faced them in 2012. With a victory the Owls would move on to the WBI semifinals to face the winner of Idaho/Eastern Washington.
Owls Seeking 20th Win
Rice (19-13) has won 19 games for the first time since the 2006-07 and will be in search of their first 20-win season since 2004-05. The Owls have won 20 games in season seven times overall.
Last Time Out
The Owls recorded the team’s first postseason victory since 2006 by defeating Lamar 73-72 in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) on Thursday at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls’ 19th victory of the season marked the first time they accomplished the feat since the 2006-07 season and Rice will be attempting their first 20-win season since 2004-05 on Sunday. Rice senior forward Jasmine Goodwine led the Owls with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field along with six rebounds. Senior guard Maya Hawkins added an additional 14 points to go with a game-high seven assists and six rebounds. Junior guard Shani Rainey also posted a balanced line with 14 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Goodwine Moves Into 10th on Scoring List
Rice senior forward Jasmine Goodwine moved into 10th place on the Rice all-time scoring list with her 21-point effort in the Owls opening round victory over Lamar in the WBI. Goodwine (1,168 points) moved past Kadie Riverin (1,155 points). Goodwine, from Killeen, Texas, was tabbed to the All-Conference USA Second Team as voted on by the league’s coaches and select media.
Rice Postseason History
The Owls are making their 11th career appearance in the postseason and the first since 2012. Rice has participated in the WNIT seven times, the NCAA Tournament twice, and now the WBI two times. The Owls are 6-8 all-time in postseason play.
UTRGV Scouting Report
UTRGV is making their third-ever postseason appearance and recorded its first-ever postseason victory with a 62-54 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Thursday. UTRGV previously competed in the WBI in 2014 and played in the WNIT last season. Shawnte’ Goff leads the team in scoring (16.4 points per game) while Mary Savoy averages 11.0 points per game.
